Mixed Doubles finals serve up day to remember

The 2025 tournament season reached a thrilling climax with some superb tennis. Following a week of wind and rain, the sun shone on the Bounds Green courts. The bumper crowd were rewarded with some high-quality tennis across two closely-fought matches.

Renée & Mike defended their title in a closely-fought match against Barbara & Ales

In the main draw, defending champions Renée & Mike faced off against Men's Singles and Doubles champion Ales and serial winner Barbara. The match lived up to expectations, going the distance. After Mike & Renée won the first set 6-3, Ales & Barbara fought back with some scintillating tennis to take the second set 6-2. Renée & Mike secured a break in the decider and managed to serve it out. Overall they won just 52% of the points, reflecting the closely-fought nature of the contest.

Susie & Richard clinched the Plate after two closely-fought sets against Mandy & Kenny

In the inaugural Mixed Doubles Plate, Susie & Richard triumphed after two very tight sets against Mandy & Kenny, winning 6-4 7-5. There was high quality tennis from both pairs, with Susie & Richard's power and pace just winning out.

Well done to all the finalists! A big thank you to Michael and Jack for expertly umpiring the finals, to Denise, Amelia and Emma for managing the bar and catering and to Sue for handling the trophy presentations with aplomb.

Road to the finals

The knockout stages of the main draw tournament saw some nail-biting matches, often played in fairly dreadful conditions. In the top half of the draw, Renée & Mike and Ros & Robin battled the rain and each other, with the former winning 6-7 6-3 10-5. Ana & Jack beat Sue & Hernan by the closest of margins, winning 3-6 7-6 10-8.

The bottom half of the draw saw Barbara & Ales edge past Asha & Danny 6-3 6-3 in a match which had to be played over three days due to the weather. Alessia & JP emerged as the winners of a Saturday morning thriller, beating Helen & Francois 6-4 3-6 10-7.

The semifinals saw Renée & Mike squeeze past Alessia & JP 7-5 7-5. Both pairs battled extremely strong winds to play some high quality tennis in a match which could have gone either way. Barbara & Ales survived four set points against Ana & Jack as they battled to a 7-6 6-4 victory, sealing their spot in the Final.

The Plate competition was no less dramatic, with Susie & Richard needing a tiebreak in the first set of their semi against Lis & Sam, before they pulled away to victory. Mandy & Kenny also required a tiebreak against Emma & Yash, before emerging as 7-6 6-4 winners.

This will be the last Bounds Green tournament played on our old courts. The tournament will return in 2026 on a brand new surface!
