Dazzling tennis as Bounds Green sparkles in the sun

The heatwave broke just in time for Finals Day, which was a relief for the large crowd as well as those playing. Our finalists made the most of it, treating Bounds Green tennis fans to some superb athletic tennis. With the BBQ and Bar doing a roaring trade and bowls in full flow, the Club was alive with activity. It was the place to be in North London.

The Women's Singles Final saw a repeat of last year's clash between Renée and Asha, only this year Asha turned the tables, winning 6-3 6-0 with a measured and consistent performance that grew in authority as the match went on.

In the Men's Singles Final, Ales made it four titles in a row, with a 7-6 6-2 win against Robin. Robin played some great tennis and served for the first set at 6-5, before Ales' matchplay experience saw him take control.

The Women's Singles Plate Final was a nail biter, with Harper just overcoming Beth 9-8(5). Harper showed some impressive defensive skills as well as a big forehand. It was just enough to overcome Beth's guile and solid net play. Both women are sure to feature prominently in the main draw competition next year.

Meanwhile, the Men's Singles Plate was an absolute epic, with Hernan clinching his second Plate title in a 6-4 2-6 7-6(1) victory against Sammy. Both men played some barnstorming tennis in a marathon match. Hernan won some admirers in the crowd, with one onlooker heard to say "Hernan's looking quite hot." It is unclear whether she was referring to his temperature, his tennis or his aura. Quite possibly all three.

It was a quick turnaround for Hernan, who was straight back on court for the Men's Doubles Final. Ultimately, Ales & JP came out on top in a very close match against Hernan & Mike, edging it 7-6(5) 7-5. The match saw some high quality doubles from all four players, leaving the crowd disappointed that the match didn't go the distance.

Renée & Ros rekindled their successful partnership to overcome serial finalists Barbara & Helen 6-4 6-3 in the Women's Doubles. This was a battle between power and consistency and, ultimately, Renée & Ros' shotmaking just won the day.

All in all, it was a brilliant day for players and spectators alike. A big thank you to our umpires - Steve, Jack, Alex, Shahid, Michael and Danny - to Sue, as Mistress of Ceremonies, and to Amelia & Debbie for cooking up a storm on the BBQ.

Finally, congratulations to Ian Herriott, who won our predictions challenge and scooped a £20 Bar voucher.
